Samba school chief shot dead

The leader of one of the most pres­ti­gious Rio Car­ni­val samba schools, who was also run­ning for a city coun­cil job, was shot dead just a week be­fore lo­cal elec­tions. Mar­cos Vieira de Souza, 52, nick­named Fal­con, was mur­dered on the cam­paign trail in Madureira by four masked men. On Septem­ber 25, an­other can­di­date for mu­nic­i­pal gov­ern­ment, Jose Ri­cardo Guimaraes, the head of a pri­vate se­cu­rity firm, was shot dead at a rally in Itab­o­rai, also in met­ro­pol­i­tan Rio.
