Gold thief arrested
A 19-year-old South Dagon township man was arrested in Tarmwe township on October 11 for allegedly stealing a block of gold from a fellow bus rider, police said.
At about 12:30pm, U Maung Ni of Dagon Seikkan township bought a K2.1 million gold block at a gold shop in Thaketa township, put it in a box and hopped on the bus to Tarmwe township.
When the bus arrived at the Mingalar Market stop, fellow passenger Ko Yan Naing Oo, 19, alit from the vehicle. U Maung Ni suspected that the young man had taken his gold. When he checked his bag, it was gone. He reported Ko Yan Naing Oo to the police station.
When police caught the young man, he shifted the blame to his friend, Jo Thar, who is still at large. Ko Yan Naing Oo said that all he did was cover for Jo Thar, who was the real thief. Ko Yan Naing Oo faces up to three years in prison for theft.
