Gold thief ar­rested

A 19-year-old South Dagon town­ship man was ar­rested in Tarmwe town­ship on Oc­to­ber 11 for al­legedly steal­ing a block of gold from a fel­low bus rider, po­lice said.

At about 12:30pm, U Maung Ni of Dagon Seikkan town­ship bought a K2.1 mil­lion gold block at a gold shop in Thaketa town­ship, put it in a box and hopped on the bus to Tarmwe town­ship.

When the bus ar­rived at the Min­galar Mar­ket stop, fel­low pas­sen­ger Ko Yan Naing Oo, 19, alit from the ve­hi­cle. U Maung Ni sus­pected that the young man had taken his gold. When he checked his bag, it was gone. He re­ported Ko Yan Naing Oo to the po­lice sta­tion.

When po­lice caught the young man, he shifted the blame to his friend, Jo Thar, who is still at large. Ko Yan Naing Oo said that all he did was cover for Jo Thar, who was the real thief. Ko Yan Naing Oo faces up to three years in prison for theft.
