In­ter­na­tional White Cane Day re­turns to Man­dalay

TO raise the morale and the vis­i­bil­ity of peo­ple with dis­abil­i­ties, ad­vo­cacy or­gan­i­sa­tions are join­ing forces with lo­cal gov­ern­ment au­thor­i­ties to stage White Cane Day in Man­dalay on Oc­to­ber 15.

The re­gional Depart­ment of So­cial Wel­fare and School for the Blind or­gan­i­sa­tions from the Shwe Minthar Foun­da­tion, Up­per Myan­mar of­fice, are com­ing to­gether to host the event.

More than 300 vis­ually im­paired peo­ple from Man­dalay, Sa­gaing, Monywa and Pyin Oo Lwin have al­ready en­rolled to take part in the event, the fifth of its kind, ac­cord­ing to the Shwe Minthar Foun­da­tion’s Man­dalay branch.

“The pur­pose of White Cane Day is to bring the sit­u­a­tion of peo­ple with dis­abil­i­ties to the at­ten­tion of the pub­lic, so that ev­ery­one can recog­nise the needs and abil­i­ties of dis­abled peo­ple, to im­prove their re­la­tion­ship with the au­thor­i­ties and raise their morale,” a foun­da­tion of­fi­cial told The Myan­mar Times on Oc­to­ber 10.

White Cane Day Cel­e­bra­tion will be­gin at Man­dalay’s Zeigyo clock tower at 6am, when vis­ually im­paired peo­ple will walk to City Hall, us­ing their white canes and ac­com­pa­nied by helpers.

In­ter­na­tional White Cane Day was first held in Yan­gon in 1992, and in up­per Myan­mar since 2011.
