Ar­gen­tines cel­e­brate saint­hood of cow­boy priest

Tens of thou­sands of pil­grims de­fied light­ning and heavy rain for an overnight out­door vigil in a town where the “gau­cho priest” that Pope Fran­cis el­e­vated to saint­hood once lived. Vast crowds gath­ered in the plaza out­side the main church of Villa Cura Brochero, in the moun­tain­ous Cor­doba prov­ince, to fol­low on gi­ant tele­vi­sion screens the Vat­i­can cer­e­mony in which Pope Fran­cis pro­claimed seven new saints. Among the new saints was pon­cho-wear­ing cow­boy Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero (1840-1914), Ar­gentina’s first Catholic saint.
