Republican party office firebombed
Police in the southern US state of North Carolina are investigating a firebomb attack on a Republican Party office, with the message “Nazi Republicans leave town or else” sprayed on an adjacent building. No one was hurt in the arson attack overnight on the Orange County Republican Party headquarters in Hillsborough, the town said in a statement. First-time politician Ryuichi Yoneyama, 49, had campaigned on a pledge to stop the refiring of the KashiwazakiKariwa power station, the world’s biggest nuclear plant, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Tokyo.
Mr Yoneyama won the race to become Niigata prefecture’s new governor, in the latest challenge for the energy policy of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who called the election results “extremely regrettable”. –
