Opera comes to Mandalay
MANDALAY residents are to be treated to a multinational opera in English next week. Filipino artist Iran Alcaraz, the organiser, says the October 30 event, at the city’s National Theatre, will help raise money for charity.
A global team of 35 Myanmar, French, British, Filipino, Germany and Japanese professionals will mount a production of the play Mira play on October 30 at Mandalay National Theatre.
“This show is premiering in Myanmar. It’s called the Fusion Dance and Broadway Concert. Myanmar Marionettes’ Organisation also supports the show. The money we made from the Yangon show has been donated to Myo Myanmar youth development centre, and we will also donate the takings from the Mandalay performance to charity too. It’s an all-singing, all-dancing opera for children and adults alike,” Alcaraz said.
Mira is about the love of a warm family, he said. Its purpose is to develop an understanding of the skills required to create art, to promote cultural exchanges between Myanmar and other countries and to support charities.
The Fusion Dance and Broadway Concert can be seen in two performances, 4-5:30pm and 7-8:30pm, at Mandalay National Theatre. Tickets went on sale on October 22 at Myanmar Marionette Theatre on 66th Street, between 26th and 27th streets, at K35,000 for VIP seats, K30,000, K25,000 and K20,000 for foreigners, and K15,000, K8000 and K5000 for Myanmar citizens.
