Urban Development Plan 2040 for three main cities nearing
A VISION of the future, in the form of long-term plans for three major cities, is nearing completion. The Ministry of Construction and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), have reviewed Urban Development Plan 2040 for the three cities and expect to complete the final draft by the end of this month.
U Zaw Zaw Aye, a spokesperson for the department of town planning, said, “Two years ago, the town planning department of the construction ministry drew up the Urban Development Plan 2040 for three main cities. But this year, the Ministry of Construction and JICA have together reviewed the projects in light of current conditions. The plans will be complete by the end of this month.”
The three cities are Pathein, in Ayeyarwady Region , Mawlamyine in Mon State and Mandalay.
The plans were drawn up on the basis of consultations with local government officials, township development committees, residents, businessmen and experts.
“When the plans are complete, we will share them with the regional governments concerned as a basis for their development plans,” said U Zaw Zaw Aye.
Though the plans’ starting point was current conditions in the three cities, including land use and existing regulations, each has its own vision for their likely development.
“Ayeyarwady regional government has already approved its Urban Development Plan 2040 as a basis for the implementation of their regional development,” said U Zaw Zaw Aye.
Pathein is envisaged as a logistics hub for the region, a centre of local agriculture and a tourist attraction. Its beaches and an expanded riverfront area will sit alongside a central business district and an industrial zone.
Mandalay is seen not only as a heritage zone, but the economic capital of the heart of the country.
And Mawlamyine will be transformed into an ASEAN corridor city, making the best use of its location to provide good connections with other states and regions and neighbouring countries, as well as comfortable place to live with an important history. It will also benefit from riverside development, industrial zones and a commercial centre.
‘When the plans are complete, we will share them with the regional governments.’
