A man who claimed to be a police officer before attempting to assault and rob a woman has been apprehended, after the woman lodged a complaint.

Shortly before midday on November 14, a woman from Hlaing Tharyar was on a bicycle after attending a festival at Shwe Yin Pyaw Pagoda.

The man reportedly pulled over on a motorcycle and said she would need to be taken in for questioning by the ward administrator. She acquiesced, and he drove her to a construction site where he slapped her in the face and told her to take off her gold chain, worth K360,000.

The woman insisted that she would hand it over once at the police station, but he forcibly grabbed a K250,000 bracelet and groped her. Police and her husband arrived, but the man ran away.

He was later caught, and charged under sections 392, 354 and 170 of the penal code at Hlaing Tharyar Myoma Police Station.
