FDA building new laboratory in Yangon
THE government department in charge of keeping food, drugs, cosmetics, and other goods safe for the public is opening a new testing ground in Yangon.
The Ministry of Health and Sports’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched construction on the four-storey building in Mingaladon township on November 11, Yangon Region FDA director Daw Khin Saw Hla said.
The goal of the new laboratory is to make the department more effective, she said.
“It will take a long time to get the laboratory up to international standards and we need technical experts to help after the construction is finished next year,” she said at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The FDA will undertake pre- and post-market surveillance to ensure that products are safe for public consumption.
“Our main responsibility is to test food, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices,” she said.
The FDA plans to extend the number of staff in its department. The Yangon FDA has about 90 staffers and that total will rise, Daw Khin Saw Hla said. The FDA employs 2875 nationwide.
The FDA was founded in 1995 and became its own department, separate from the Ministry of Health, in 2013.
