Maha Myat Muni Pagoda mu­seum slated for 2017 up­grade

THE Bud­dhism mu­seum in Man­dalay’s Maha Myat Muni Pagoda is slated to un­dergo ma­jor ren­o­va­tions in 2017, U Than Lwin, a pagoda trustee, said yes­ter­day.

The ex­hi­bi­tions will soon in­clude re­li­gious dis­plays and dis­plays re­lated to the city of Man­dalay, he said.

“Huge ren­o­va­tions are planned for the Bud­dhism mu­seum,” he said. “We al­ready have the bud­get for a good mu­seum and we may get pagoda fund money and do­na­tions as well, there­fore the nec­es­sary bud­get is noth­ing to be wor­ried about.”

The mas­ter plan is cur­rently be­ing drawn up and the ren­o­va­tions will be the first in 36 years, he said.

“Al­most all the nec­es­sary things have been done, ex­cept the mas­ter plan,” U Than Lwin said. “We will start ren­o­va­tions as soon as the plans are fin­ished. We are pre­par­ing to form com­mit­tees.”

Maha Myat Muni Pagoda is con­sid­ered one of the coun­try’s most sa­cred Bud­dhist shrines and the Min­istry of Re­li­gious Af­fairs and Cul­ture is tasked with pro­tect­ing and de­vel­op­ing the site.
