HP’s Fishing 101

go! Namibia - - TOUR DIARY -

Heavy rig. My heavy rig generally consists of a 14-foot rod and a size 40 multiplier reel. With this rig I’m able to cast bigger bait further. Light outfit. My light rig is a 10-foot rod and a size 5 000 fixedspool reel. Using this, I can fish with artificial lures and enjoy the fight of a smaller fish much more than with the heavy rod and reel. Bait. In Namibia they say you can use any bait, as long as it’s sardine (or pilchard) – and it’s true. This oily bait attracts the fish quickly, especially when the water is murky (as it often is on the Skeleton Coast) and fish tend to feed using smell instead of sight. You can catch most species in Namibia with this bait, except galjoen (they like white mussel). You’ll get the best results using neatly cut bait on a 6/0 hook.
