6.30 pm.

The sun sets over the river as we set­tle down on the boat. Around us wa­ter­birds like African darter and reed cor­morants fly home. A pied king­fisher sits on its perch, one eye on the wa­ter for a fi­nal fishy snack. On the op­po­site bank, in one of the large trees (where the old 32 Bat­tal­lion base lies hid­den), I see the white breast of a fish-ea­gle catch the sun.

7.30 pm.

Back at Ngepi. Should we pre­pare our own din­ner at the camp­site or head down to Ngepi’s restau­rant? I heard there’s milk tart on the menu tonight…
