Cases of rape, acid attack and murder continue to increase
When the government and the police administration have been facing public wrath for their failure to find the culprit behind the rape and murder of 13year-old Nirmala Panta of Kanchanpur, more cases of rape, murder and acid attacks have been reported from across the country. When the people in Dhanghadhi and Kathmandu were protesting against the rape and murder of Panta, another teenage girl of Rautahat died in an acid attack last week. Samjhana Das, 18, of Rautahat breathed her last in Kathmandu while undergoing treatment after she was attacked by acid in her home village. Her younger sister Sushmita Kumari, 15, who was also attacked with acid, is still fighting for life in a hospital. Girls in Kanchapur, Pokhara, Bara, Dadeldhura and Rautahat were raped after the murder of Panta in two months suggesting that criminal activities have escalated in Nepal in recent weeks. Moreover, most of the victims of the latest crimes are young girls and women. Two cases of rape and three cases of murder were reported from Bara district alone in four weeks. Of course, the increasing cases of rape of the minors and murder suggest that law and order siutaion has deteriorated after the formation of the present powerful government. A few weeks ago chairman of the ruling CPN Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the cases of rape were increased with an intention of failing the government. His remarks look irrelevant and showed the unwillingness of the leadership to control the criminal activities but interpret them as conspiracies against the government. Besides, the murder and rape, cases of corruption and irregularities have also gone up.
