Big win for little Fifi

Auckland City Harbour News - - News - By Lisa Sloan

Alex Jones thinks her dog Fifi is the cutest dog in the world.

And after a dog parade at Ponsonby Primary school last Friday, the yorkshire terrier has won a few new fans as well.

Six-year-old Alex showed Fifi off to crowds of children and parents and was awarded the prize of smallest dog.

Dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes were led around the school field by their proud owners and won prizes in a range of categories.

The dog day was organised by Bayleys Real Estate, who sponsors the annual Red Puppy guide dog appeal.

Children listened to presentations from the SPCA in the morning before joining the parade in the afternoon.

Organiser Felicity Scott says it is important for children to learn about caring for animals.

“If children learn to be kind to animals, they are showing care and concern for their community as well,” she says.

Categories in the dog parade included biggest ears, best tail wagging, most elegant, fluffiest and dribbliest dog.

School dog Jock was first to parade around the field and each child and dog was given a prize for taking part.

Children were encouraged to make a donation to the guide dog appeal.

Principal Anne Malcolm says the day was a great success.

“It was glorious and fantastic, the kids just loved it,” she says.
