Tribute 08 salutes Vietnam vets
Vietnam veterans are being urged to attend a formal government tribute to take place in Wellington next month.
So far only 116 of the 600 surviving gunners from 161 Battery have signed up for Tribute 08.
Royal New Zealand Artillery Association secretary Mike Dakin says the parade and government apology will finally recognise their service.
The battery was New Zealand’s first and longest-serving military unit in Vietnam, with 821 gunners posted over seven years from June 1965.
Overall, 37 New Zealanders were killed in Vietnam and many have died or suffered serious medical conditions since.
Veterans and families can register for Tribute 08 at www.tribute08.com.
