Trib­ute 08 salutes Viet­nam vets

Viet­nam vet­er­ans are be­ing urged to at­tend a for­mal gov­ern­ment trib­ute to take place in Welling­ton next month.

So far only 116 of the 600 sur­viv­ing gun­ners from 161 Bat­tery have signed up for Trib­ute 08.

Royal New Zealand Ar­tillery As­so­ci­a­tion sec­re­tary Mike Dakin says the pa­rade and gov­ern­ment apol­ogy will fi­nally recog­nise their ser­vice.

The bat­tery was New Zealand’s first and long­est-serv­ing mil­i­tary unit in Viet­nam, with 821 gun­ners posted over seven years from June 1965.

Over­all, 37 New Zealan­ders were killed in Viet­nam and many have died or suf­fered se­ri­ous med­i­cal con­di­tions since.
