Hospital carpark plans
An extra 135 parking spaces will be created to ease traffic tension at Auckland hospital.
But designs have still not been confirmed for a multi-level carpark planned for Park Rd, next to the hospital and Auckland Domain entrance.
At a meeting this month the Auckland District Health Board approved a $3.1 million upgrade to its helipad carpark.
The extension will be added at one end of the multi-level block, rather than building on top.
Chief financial officer Roger Jarrold says the board is moving ahead with plans because the Park Rd development has been stalled.
Leased carparks for staff in Newmarket are also becoming harder to find.
“As Newmarket becomes more developed, carparks are few and far between.”
The board has resource consent to build on Park Rd, but the project was delayed last year when Auckland City Council objected to the design.
Grafton Residents Association chairman David Haigh says the group is still against the Park Rd proposal.
“I can’t think of a worse thing to put next to the Domain than a carpark building.”
Mr Haigh says the association would be happier if some of the proposed carpark went underground.
Several design options will be presented to the district health board.
