Uptown hotel goes green

Tourists who care about their carbon footprint can now check into an Auckland hotel committed to being environmentally friendly.

Auckland City Hotel, Hobson St boasts 1000 energy saving light bulbs and half of the corridor lights are activated by motion sensors. And unlike most hotels, Auckland City Hotel isn’t air conditioned and asks guests to request a heating or cooling unit if they need one.

Biodegradable corn starch bags and bins are used in the hotel’s kitchens and hotel staff are briefed on an internal recycling scheme for rubbish. Mini bars are only filled at the request of guests, keeping fridges empty to reduce power use.

And if that wasn’t enough, the hotel plans to offer guests the chance to do their sightseeing by hiring a bike rather than using public transport.
