Meet rescue copter crews
Families will have a chance to get up close and personal with Auckland’s rescue helicopter crew this Sunday.
The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust will open its hangar at Mechanics Bay.
The open day also marks the launch of Westpac Rescue Helicopter appeal month.
The public will be able to see two rescue helicopters and a police helicopter close up and meet the paramedics, pilots and crew.
Trust chief executive Rea Wikaira says as well as being a fundraiser, it will be a really hands on day, giving people a chance to understand how the trust operates.
“It’s an accountability day too,” he says.
“People can ask questions and have an opportunity to look at the equipment and meet staff.”
The public will be able to ride the helicopter simulator, watch a winch display and go on baby BK chopper rides.
Discounted Heli-link scenic flights over the harbour will also be running all day.
The annual Westpac appeal is now in its fourth year, becoming more successful every year.
Mr Wikaira says after raising $600,000 in 2006 and $750,000 last year, they are hoping for $850,000 this year.
