Trout release a bonus for fishing contest

Auckland City Harbour News - - News -

Chances of catching a big trout in Takapuna’s Lake Pupuke were boosted last week when 500 fish weighing up to 2kg were released.

The water quality in the lake is excellent. It supports a good number of rainbow trout and other species including perch, tench, rudd and eels.

There are also catfish and koi carp in the lake, which grow up to 4kg.

The trout come from the renowned Ngongotaha hatchery at Rotorua.

Trout of up to 5kg are rumoured to have been caught in Lake Pupuke and the catch rate can be high in the cooler months.

North Shore Fly Fishers Club and Trout Unlimited New Zealand will hold a contest at the lake on Sunday as part of their drive to promote it as a sports fishing venue and get data about fish size and numbers.

The angler who catches the heaviest trout will win prizes worth $500 and there are lots of other prizes on offer, all donated by Hunt Sports Store of Crown Hill and Trout Unlimited.

The contest begins at 6am and finishes at 3.30pm. Weigh-in and prizegiving is at the Sylvan Park reserve.

All legal fishing methods can be used, and anglers can fish from non-powered craft.

Every participant needs a valid fishing licence, which can be bought from Hunts Sports Store. Licences for children under 10 are free.
