A vacant Ponsonby Rd site may have to be decontaminated before new owners can redevelop it.

The former Mobil station on the corner of Ponsonby Rd and Mackelvie St has been vacant since it was sold by the petrol company two years ago.

The Auckland City Harbour News understands discussions between Mobil and the new owner over cleanup of the site have delayed redevelopment.

Mobil spokesman Allan Bailey says negotiations with the new owner have been “challenging”.

Mobil is seeking resource consents from the Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council so that remediation can go ahead.

Although the owner of the property refused to comment, the Auckland City Council confirmed the site is listed as being potentially contaminated.

A council spokesperson says the consent application has been on hold since September 2007 while the applicant amends the proposed remediation method.
