Can you spin poetry magic in front of a live audience then convince that audience to vote for you?
Then you may be New Zealand’s next Poetry, Idol according to producer and MC Penny Ashton, whose own penchant for poetry has her looking for 10 people to be part of a great night out.
Poetry Idol will be a feature of the 2008 Auckland’s Readers and Writers’ Festival from May 14 to 18.
“We had a real mix performing last year from teenagers to an 87-year-old,” Ms Ashton says.
Auditions are on Saturday from 10am to noon at the London Bar.
The finalists will battle it out in front of judges and spoken word icons King Kapisi, Heather O’Neill and Tusata Avia on May 16. Members of the audience will be voting for their favourite poet as well as enjoying some great entertainment.
First prize winner gets to be called New Zealand’s Poetry Idol as well $450 in cash and prizes.
