Can you spin po­etry magic in front of a live au­di­ence then con­vince that au­di­ence to vote for you?

Then you may be New Zealand’s next Po­etry, Idol ac­cord­ing to pro­ducer and MC Penny Ash­ton, whose own pen­chant for po­etry has her look­ing for 10 peo­ple to be part of a great night out.

Po­etry Idol will be a fea­ture of the 2008 Auck­land’s Read­ers and Writ­ers’ Fes­ti­val from May 14 to 18.

“We had a real mix per­form­ing last year from teenagers to an 87-year-old,” Ms Ash­ton says.

Au­di­tions are on Satur­day from 10am to noon at the Lon­don Bar.

The fi­nal­ists will bat­tle it out in front of judges and spo­ken word icons King Kapisi, Heather O’Neill and Tusata Avia on May 16. Mem­bers of the au­di­ence will be vot­ing for their favourite poet as well as en­joy­ing some great en­ter­tain­ment.

First prize win­ner gets to be called New Zealand’s Po­etry Idol as well $450 in cash and prizes.
