Win prizes and make gains by losing big
The search for Auckland’s Biggest Loser is on.
Inspired by the American fitness reality television show, firefighter Chonell Ford and friend Kimberley Joe are volunteering their time to challenge people for Auckland’s equivalent.
The 12-week community programmes run regularly in Mission Bay and Newmarket and include advice on nutrition and exercise.
Mrs Ford, also a personal wellness coach, says the competition between clients is inspiring.
“They are getting great results. Everyone in the classes are all in the same boat, whether they are struggling with weight loss or losing motivation. The feedback has been inspiring because they are competing with each other and don’t want to let the other person win.”
Weekly meetings ensure clients are kept on track.
For Michelle Reti the meetings have been a source of inspiration and motivation.
“It’s good because it’s mainly women who are all going through the same thing. It’s a good kick up the backside and if you need someone to talk to, they are there.”
She says she has changed her eating habits in just a month and feels better physically and emotionally.
In the first week, she lost 5.9kg, and hopes to lose a total of 20kg by the end of the 12 weeks.
With three school-aged children, she is revelling in her new-found energy.
“I’m eating healthier and my energy levels are 10 times better. I can be a better mother for them.”
Mrs Ford says Mrs Reti’s weight loss is an “awesome amount”, and hopes it will inspire other women to take the first step.
The Weight Loss Challenge and Class supports all weight loss programmes, such as Jenny Craig, Sure Slim and Weight Watchers.
Mrs Ford says coaches can also recommend easy and successful options that fit a person’s budget.
A website tells clients about aspects of weight loss and dieting.
Participants weigh in each week and the three people with the highest percentage of weight lost at the end of the course win prize money.
“More participants equates to more fun and a bigger prize pot,” says Mrs Ford.
The winner gets 50 percent of the “pot”, second is 30 percent and third is 20 percent. A separate prize goes to the person with the highest measurement loss.
New programmes start regularly and cost $29, all of which is paid back to the winners in prizes and cash.
