Museum wins beauty contest

The Auckland War Memorial Museum was named the city’s best building in the online survey, in which more than 2500 people voted.

Others in the top five were the downtown ferry building, the Chancery, West Plaza and the Metropolis.

And the worst buildings in our town?

The green, white and red Newton Comfort Inn and Suites was voted the worst, followed by the Auckland City Council offices, the Scene apartments, the Tank Farm and Downtown Shopping Centre.

“As soon as I got the call about the survey I knew exactly what it was for and it wasn’t to let me know that we’d won,” says Newton Comfort Inn and Suites general manager Trish Miles.

“This sort of publicity is just what I need to persuade the powers that be to get the building painted sooner rather than later.”

Ingite Architects, which ran the survey, says it plan to run it again next year.
