Top notch show
This weekend’s Concert at Karaka promises to showcase some of the finest established and emerging musicians.
The 10th anniversary concert is a fundraiser for the Papakura Rotary Club to assist with projects like its scholarship programme for talented local students.
Vocalist Helen Medlyn and conductor Penny Dodd top the bill. Both have successful individual careers but have worked together for 25 years presenting concerts and recitals throughout the country.
They have created and performed seven highly regarded cabaret shows and recorded an album of jazz standards called Darling, it’s Hell.
Young pianist Denny Liu returns for his second performance at Karaka after earning a standing ovation last year.
The 17-year-old toured New Zealand last year with the Auckland Youth Orchestra including a gala concert in the Auckland Town Hall.
He was awarded third prize in Brisbane in the Lev Vlassenko International Piano Competition, being the youngest competitor and the only New Zealander to place.
Talented 16-year-old twins Grace and Olivia Francis will also take the stage.
The Cambridge residents are keen musicians and began learning piano when they were both just four years old. Olivia has since taken up the violin and Grace the oboe.
The St Cecilia Singers, the elite choir from Diocesan School for Girls, is also set to perform.
Last year the singers won a gold award at the national final of the secondary schools choir competition The Big Sing.
Champion band Dalewool Auckland Brass will also be on stage. It was champion band of New Zealand in 2003 and 2004 and in 2005 won the prestigious band of the year title.
Last year it was the top placed New Zealand band at the National Brass Band Championships held on the North Shore.
Two shows will be held at the New Zealand Bloodstock Centre in Karaka, at 7.30pm on Saturday and at 1.30pm on Sunday.
Special platinum tickets are available for $75 each for the Saturday show, which include preshow drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
Standard tickets are $45, senior citizens $40 and school children $30.
