Marathon honours Lydiard
Legendary New Zealand running coach Arthur Lydiard is set to be honoured with a new marathon based on some of his favourite trails.
Although a 35km version of the race, called The Legend, has been run in west Auckland for the last three years, September 20 will be the first time it has been extended to a full marathon distance of 42.2km.
Olympians such as Murray Halberg, Peter Snell and Barry Magee honed their skills on Lydiard’s Waiatarua endurance training circuit, which is included in the race.
It starts from Shadbolt Park in New Lynn, before a 3.5km slog up the Waiatarua hill to Scenic Drive, along to Titirangi and then down Godley Rd.
It then approaches the finish line, before it turning into Golf Rd for the last 7.1km and finishing where it started at Shadbolt Park.
The first man and woman home each take away $5000, with another $8000 split among the next five men and women finishers.
A further $6000 will go to an associated half marathon, with the winners taking $1500 each.
