Richmond deals to Ponsonby
Richmond took their first step towards turning their season around after they defeated Ponsonby 34-16 in the Fox preliminary league series on Saturday.
“We lost three in a row before that so we were getting pretty desperate for a win,” Richmond coach John Teina says.
He credits the return of hooker-come-halfback Pita Godinet from Auckland Vulcans duty as one of the major reasons for the win at Grey Lynn Park
The Auckland Vulcans, who play in the New South Wales Cup, are made up of top players from the Fox series and Warriors squad members not required by the first grade side.
But Richmond have their work cut out for them in the coming weeks if they hope to make the top eight, with games against top sides Northcote, Mt Albert and Glenora.
“We’re trying to focus on the mental side of things,” he says.
“Our young guys lack experience, but we’re saying the right things to them and reinforce what we’ve been going over.”
The club currently sit in eighth equal spot with Papakura. At the top of the table Mt Albert continued their unbeaten run, thumping Papakura 52-12 at Fowlds Park, while Marist continued their impressive form overwhelming Te Atatu 40-14 at Murray Halberg Park.
And Bay Roskill went down to Manurewa 42-28 at Leabank Park.
This week Richmond visit Northcote at Birkenhead War Memorial, Mt Albert face Pakuranga at Ti Rakau Park, Bay Roskill host Otahuhu at Blockhouse Bay, Ponsonby take on Te Atatu at Jack Colvin Park and Marist play East Coast Bays at Murray Halberg Park. All matches start at 2.30pm.
