Dezma puts her heart into Everest marathon
Dezma McGregor will run in the shadow of the world’s highest peak when she races in the Tenzing-Hillary marathon later this month.
The 42km run will see her traverse Sherpa trails that lead to Namche Bazaar, the last town before the famous mountain.
The mum of one, who works in Penrose, says she read about a similar race in a magazine.
But she chose to do the Tenzing-Hillary marathon because it takes place on May 29, the day Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Everest.
“When I decided to do this race Sir Ed had not yet passed away but after he died I really wanted to do the race in order to celebrate the amazing life of an incredibly amazing man.”
Dezma has to carry food, first aid kits and wet weather gear on the journey, as well as deal with freezing temperatures, rough terrain and the possibility of coming down with altitude sickness.
Despite all the challenges, Dezma hopes to finish in about 10 hours.
“The majority of competitors are Sherpas so they tend to finish the race a lot earlier than foreigners. I think the fastest foreigner has completed this race in about four hours. I’m not particularly worried about my time. I just want to finish.”
She will also spend two weeks on a trek to a base camp to help acclimatise to the higher altitude.
The race is the first of several events the New Lynn resident plans to take part in over the next few years to raise $50,000 for the Heart Foundation.
“I chose the Heart Foundation because it is a charity I could relate to,” she says.
“As a previously obese person I realised had I not changed my unhealthy lifestyle I was destined to become one of the 16 people that die each day because of cardiovascular disease.”
Dezma has lost 50kg since taking up running three years ago.
Heart Foundation marketing manager Bruce Waldin says Dezma’s $50,000 goal shows real commitment.
