St James tower project on hold

Auckland City Harbour News - - News -

A bid to build an apartment building over the historic St James Theatre is on hold.

Auckland City Council is waiting for more information about structural strengthening to ensure the stability of the theatre. In the meantime consent has been given for minor earthworks on site to investigate the condition and location of building foundations.

Developer Paul Doole plans to build a 39-level glass tower above the protected Queen St building.

The Antipodean Apartments proposal would leave the theatre building largely intact.

The St James has been closed since a fire in May 2007.
