Gables opponents angry at council

Auckland City Harbour News - - Letters -

A decision on a mixeduse development on the site of the Gables Tavern in Herne Bay is due within weeks.

The appeal against the decision to decline resource consent was heard in the Environment Court last month.

Residents fighting the bid are angry Auckland City Council withdrew its opposition to the development shortly before the hearing.

A council spokesman says the scale of the development was reduced and external expert witnesses were no longer happy to support a position against the proposal.

Residents’ group spokeswoman Kate Stanton says the council’s 11th-hour withdrawal left residents unable to find their own witnesses.

“It certainly weakened our side,” she says.

Developers propose to build apartments, retail and offices on the Kelmarna Ave site, but residents say the building will shade neighbouring houses and cause traffic problems.

A decision is expected within four weeks.
