Marathon effort on Mt Everest

Dezma McGregor did her country proud in a race around the base of Mt Everest last month.

She and partner Adrian Cooper were the only New Zealanders to take part in the 42km TenzingMarathon to raise money for the Heart Foundation.

After falling sick on a two-week trek up to Everest’s base camp, the pair finished the race in last place out of 130 competitors in just under 17 hours.

“When we came in it was quite dark and our guide didn’t know where the finish line was,” she says.

Because of bad luck with their guide and a poorly signposted course, organisers changed the New Zealanders’ official finish time to 13 hours.

Dezma says the race will make others she might do in the future easier.

Her next challenge is the 60km Kepler Challenge in the South Island in December.

And after being inspired by Everest, Dezma says an attempt to climb it could be on the cards.

“I’m seriously considering it – there’s never been a Maori woman near the summit of Everest.”
