Volleyball player Syreeta Norris got the shock of her life recently when she was selected to represent her country.

The 15-year-old Avondale College student will travel to Australia next month with the under-17 women’s squad for the Australian junior volleyball championships.

“I never thought I’d be playing for New Zealand,” the Mt Albert resident says.

“I didn’t think I was that good.”

Syreeta, who plays in the attacking position of outside hitter, says she gets a buzz out of playing in front of a crowd.

“It feels good when you know people are watching and you do a good hit.”

However she isn’t sure how the team will go at the tournament because the side changes every year.

She says there are added benefits of playing volleyball that keep her in the game.

“The friends you make and the places you go are great.”

And no one can doubt Syreeta’s commitment to the side, with recent trips to Tauranga and Hamilton for New Zealand team training.

But netball also vies for Syreeta’s time – she represents her school in the premier competition during the week.

Avondale College director of sport Nathan Samu says Syreeta is a natural sportswoman after achieving success in swimming and water polo as well.

He is confident she has the ability to go on to higher honours if she sticks with volleyball.

“She’s got talent mixed with a good work ethic,” he says.

“It helps to have good genetics, a love of the sport and that work-hard-go-get-them attitude.”
