Long full life for 107-year-old Nell
Lucy Eleanor Williamson’s life was filled with milestones many others never achieve.
The Selwyn Village resident amazed those around her when she made it to her 100th birthday.
And the surprises kept on coming when she notched up 105, 106 and then 107 years.
Lucy, better known as Nell, led a life filled with family, friends and dedicated service to the community. So when she decided it was time to go, more than 200 people were there to say farewell.
Nell died on June 16 and her funeral was held at the Mt Albert Methodist church last Friday.
Born on October 27, 1900, in Folkestone, England, to a road worker and a children’s nanny, Nell emigrated to New Zealand after a six-week voyage aboard the Athenic in 1905.
She first lived in Ponsonby with her family and attended Richmond Road school and Seddon Technical College.
She worked as a milliner for Smith and Caugheys and Milne and Choice before marrying Victor Williamson in 1923.
The couple lived in Alberton Ave in Mt Albert in a house built by Victor for more than 70 years and had two children, Earle and Betty.
When Mr Williamson died in 1975, Nell stayed living in their family home until she turned 100 and moved to the Selwyn Village in Pt Chevalier.
Throughout her life until her 80s, Nell was involved in the Women’s Institute, the League of Mothers, and Communicare as an instructor and helper. She was also on the Mt Albert Mayoress’ Committee and made floral bouquets and button holes for many council functions and was a patron of the Mt Albert Horticultural Society.
She was particularly fond of knitting and known for her lovingly made coat hanger covers.
Family were baffled by her longevity.
“There’s no reason as far as we know,” said son Earle her 106th birthday.
“She never smoked or drank to any large degree. She would have had the odd wine.”
Daughter-in-law Myra Williamson says Nell’s passing was not unexpected.
“She had become very frail and she just virtually faded away,” she says.
“It was very peaceful,” she says.
Mrs Williamson is survived by her children, seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-greatgrandchildren.
