All ears at annual blessing
Creatures great and small gathered for the Blessing of the Animals in Auckland on Sunday.
Dogs, cats, donkeys, rats, and cattle joined the festivities at St Matthew-in-theCity with their owners.
SPCA chief executive Bob Kerridge says the highland cattle were among his favourite non-human guests at the annual event.
“We also had a lovely array of dogs, cats, mice and birds,” he says.
“Of course, when All Creatures Great and Small was sung, all of them joined in. It was a lovely cacophony.”
The service marks the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, and this year also celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Auckland SPCA.
Singer Elizabeth Marvelly performed a song she recorded for the SPCA anniversary, called You’re Always There For Me.
“That was accompanied by a video clip of the SPCA at work with animals. It was a lovely, moving moment,” Mr Kerridge says.
The service was preceded by a parade of animals and owners along Queen St to the church.
