Record numbers of Aucklanders have attended free Ports of Auckland boat tours and guided walks as part of the 2008 Heritage Festival.

More than 1500 people enjoyed free boat tours of the port and harbour, up 50 percent on last year, and another 140 participated in guided walks of the historic red fence.

Ports of Auckland put on three extra boat tours to cater for the unprecedented demand.

“It’s great to see such public interest in Auckland’s port and its shared history with the city,” says managing director Jens Madsen.

For those unable to take advantage of the special Heritage Festival sailings, similar free boat tours of the port are also run for the public and school groups on a weekly basis year round.

More information can be found at www.poal.munity.

“We invite port neighbours and the wider Auckland community to take advantage of our free boat tours all-year round,” Mr Madsen says.
