A new book by two local authors promises to give a fascinating insight into the rich history of Ponsonby.
Urban Village, by Ponsonby residents Jenny Carlyon and Diana Morrow, traces the story of Ponsonby, St Mary’s Bay and Freemans Bay from the time of the early settlers, following its change from an immigrant neighbourhood to the affluent suburb of today.
It took two years and more than 70 interviews to collect all the information and track down countless old photographs from museums and archives.
Jenny Carlyon says what fascinated her was learning how rich and diverse the area has remained.
The book is full of captivating photos, showing the area from its early beginnings.
The Auckland City Harbour News has two copies of Urban Village to give away.
