Parnell pushed in narrow win
Pompallier pushed reigning Caro Bowl tennis champs Parnell to the limit on Friday night.
After both sides won three matches apiece in the tie, Parnell had to rely on a narrow 8-6 set countback to secure victory.
Pompallier stalwarts Robbie Cheyne and James Shortall kept the St Mary’s Bay club in the hunt after defeating top-ranked Parnell players Matt Prentice and Andrew Batie in the singles and doubles.
But Steve Downs and Jacob Olsen saved the day for the title-holders, squaring things up in the second half.
Meanwhile West End cleaned up Campbell Park 6-0 to move into second place on the competition ladder. Performances from Mark Nielsen, Teo Susnjak, Martin Colenbrander and James Greenhalgh helped the Westmerebased club to the win.
Royal Oak secured their first win of the season over Remuera 4-2, while Blockhouse Bay racked up the same scoreline over Kohimarama.
In the women’s competition Royal Oak sit at the top of the ladder after defeating Kohimarama 6-0. And Mangere Combined whitewashed Pompallier, with just one match going to three sets.
On Friday Pompallier’s men travel to Campbell Park, Blockhouse Bay host Royal Oak and West End visit Remuera. In women’s action Pompallier welcome Glendowie and Royal Oak play Parnell at home. All matches start at 6pm.
