Par­nell pushed in nar­row win

Pom­pal­lier pushed reign­ing Caro Bowl ten­nis champs Par­nell to the limit on Fri­day night.

Af­ter both sides won three matches apiece in the tie, Par­nell had to rely on a nar­row 8-6 set count­back to se­cure victory.

Pom­pal­lier stal­warts Rob­bie Cheyne and James Shor­tall kept the St Mary’s Bay club in the hunt af­ter de­feat­ing top-ranked Par­nell play­ers Matt Pren­tice and An­drew Batie in the sin­gles and dou­bles.

But Steve Downs and Ja­cob Olsen saved the day for the ti­tle-hold­ers, squar­ing things up in the sec­ond half.

Mean­while West End cleaned up Camp­bell Park 6-0 to move into sec­ond place on the com­pe­ti­tion lad­der. Per­for­mances from Mark Nielsen, Teo Sus­n­jak, Martin Colen­bran­der and James Green­halgh helped the West­mere­based club to the win.

Royal Oak se­cured their first win of the sea­son over Re­muera 4-2, while Blockhouse Bay racked up the same score­line over Ko­hi­marama.

In the women’s com­pe­ti­tion Royal Oak sit at the top of the lad­der af­ter de­feat­ing Ko­hi­marama 6-0. And Man­gere Com­bined white­washed Pom­pal­lier, with just one match go­ing to three sets.

On Fri­day Pom­pal­lier’s men travel to Camp­bell Park, Blockhouse Bay host Royal Oak and West End visit Re­muera. In women’s action Pom­pal­lier wel­come Glen­dowie and Royal Oak play Par­nell at home. All matches start at 6pm.
