Auckland fastpitch softball champs Mt Albert Ramblers took up where they left off last season in the competition’s opening round on Saturday.

The club notched up a resounding 7-2 win over Howick, with Bernard Hale and Matty Hicks both sending balls over the fence in the second innings of the match. Mike Gibbs, Tipene Paul and Michael Cameron also scored for Ramblers later in the game.

Howick had a dream start with back-to-back home runs, but they couldn’t keep up with the dominant Mt Albert side.

Meanwhile Auckland United were down 10 early on against the new North Shore-based Roosters team. But United eventually came out on top, winning 8-1 after a four-run homer from Isaac Fletcher.

Marist also had a successful start to the season with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over Eden Roskill.

In women’s action, last year’s champions Ramblers strolled to a 7-0 win against Howick. Ramblers’ pitcher Carina Hale showed her skill with the bat, scoring twice, while Jarrah Tuoro, Emma Scowcroft and Victoria Reyland added to the scoresheet.

The Waitakere Bears side defeated Metro 4-0 with only three hits in the game. Waitakere’s Michal Tangaroa gave up only one hit, while Metro’s Megan Farrell suffered just two from her time on the mound.
