Rivals take out Ramblers

Auckland City Harbour News - - Sport -

Auckland fastpitch softball champs Mt Albert Ramblers discovered they won’t have everything their own way in this year’s competition.

The champions were pushed aside 5-3 by rivals Auckland United in a last inning rally during the first of four matches at Rosedale Park.

United pitcher Thomas Enoka’s subtle changes of pace and height kept the Ramblers’ batters guessing all day.

In the last inning Kallan Campain and Reece Gasson hit well to secure the win for United.

Ramblers soon found the form that abandoned them in the first match, scrambling to a 7-4 win against new side Roosters.

They then stepped up to another level with a 3-2 effort against a competitive Marist side, before thrashing Glenfield 13-4 in their last match of the round.

Meanwhile, United couldn’t repeat the success they had against Ramblers, dipping out to the Waitakere Bears 6-5 in a tense tiebreaker.

Home runs to United’s Ben Enoka and Rod Caddy weren’t enough, as they failed to take the chances offered.

But the side did manage to come away with a 7-4 victory against Howick in their final match.

Despite losing to Ramblers, Marist were able to overcome Waitakere 2-0 and Northcote 6-3, while Eden beat Otahuhu 8-5 in a tiebreaker before losing out to Waitakere.
