Park revamp to continue
Work on the abandoned Grey Lynn Park upgrade should be back on track within the next year.
The Western Bays Community Board has committed $597,000 of financial contributions to getting the remaining improvements to the park underway.
Funding for the $1.9 million upgrade, which began in 2004, was overlooked in a council system changeover, leaving $888,000 spent and much of the work unfinished or not started.
It was thought the money would have to be reallocated in the council’s long-term plan.
Since then money has been located in the Western Bays financial contributions account, which must be spent in the ward within the next year.
Councillor Graeme Easte says the money neatly fits the bill.
But there is still $303,000 needed for the rest of the upgrade that will have to come from the council’s long term community plan.
Councillor Greg Moyle says there’s no guarantee the money will be allocated.
“In the current economic environment, these sort of contributions are ceasing.”
A report outlining the priorities for the next stage of work was given at the meeting and included improvements to park entrances, playgrounds and pathways.
