Imports don’t stop Campbell Park loss

Campbell Park couldn’t quite overcome reigning champs Parnell in the Caro Bowl intertennis competition, going down 4-2 on Friday night.

That’s despite a win from Aussie imports Kaden Hensell and Adam Hubble, who started the tie against Parnell’s Matt Prentice and Al Hunt.

Hensell and Hubble are a particularly competitive doubles combination, recently winning a US$15,000 futures event in South Australia.

Steve Downs and Jacob Olsen scored one back for Parnell, defeating Andrew Gregory and promising Canterbury junior Barrett Franks.

In the singles Prentice put in a good performance to win in two tiebreaks over Hensell, while Hubble was taken to three sets by Hunt.

It was in the bottom two matches where Parnell gained the wins as Andrew Batie beat Gregory in straight sets and Olsen was taken to three sets by Franks.

Campbell Park team manager David Lewis says they decided to bring in the imports so they weren’t relegated in their first year back in the Caro Bowl.

“Most of the Auckland players were already signed up by other clubs.

“Fielding a team that would have been relegated doesn’t achieve anything.”

And Lewis sees sponsors bringing the likes of Hensell and Hubble across the ditch as a good investment for future Campbell Park players.

“We’ve got a very large junior membership. It’s great for the juniors to see that level of tennis at the club,” he says.

“We’re trying to field a good team to provide quality tennis to the Auckland public.”

Meanwhile, West End overcame Royal Oak 5-1 to remain in second spot, Pompallier pipped Kohimarama on a set countback 8-7 and Blockhouse Bay easily put away Remuera 6-0.

In women’s action Mission Bay overcame Royal Oak 42, while in a bottom-of-thetable clash Pompallier managed a countback win over Remuera.

Next week the Campbell Park men host Kohimarama, Pompallier visit Remuera, Parnell welcome Royal Oak and Blockhouse Bay travel to West End.

And the Pompallier women visit Kohimarama, while Royal Oak host Mangere Combined.
