The dance moves of the St Joseph’s church con­gre­ga­tion proved a pow­er­ful fundraiser.

The Grey Lynn church held a Po Siva, a tra­di­tional Samoan fundraiser, ear­lier this month and raised $21,000 to­wards re­pair­ing the build­ing.

Fa­ther Bill Ham­mond started the event with a prayer and his Samoan siva dance be­fore other parish­ioners danced for do­na­tions from friends and fam­ily.

The church needs to raise $400,000 for a new roof and other re­pairs.

Parish­ioner Sam Chow says the event at­tracted a good turnout de­spite clash­ing with an event at an­other church.

The church has raised $92,000 to­wards its goal and plans to hold an­other event in Fe­bru­ary.
