Dancing in the street
The dance moves of the St Joseph’s church congregation proved a powerful fundraiser.
The Grey Lynn church held a Po Siva, a traditional Samoan fundraiser, earlier this month and raised $21,000 towards repairing the building.
Father Bill Hammond started the event with a prayer and his Samoan siva dance before other parishioners danced for donations from friends and family.
The church needs to raise $400,000 for a new roof and other repairs.
Parishioner Sam Chow says the event attracted a good turnout despite clashing with an event at another church.
The church has raised $92,000 towards its goal and plans to hold another event in February.
