Ramblers on track to retain titles
A spate of excellent batting gave the Mt Albert Ramblers a win over the Waitakere Bears in the Auckland fastpitch softball competition on Saturday.
The Ramblers pulled off a 5-2 win over the title challengers at St Lukes.
Faced with Bears’ second pitcher Donny Hale, Aaron Thompson, Matthew Hicks and Michael Gibbs used the chance to create some runs and held on to win with the three early runs.
The Ramblers are on track to retain their Auckland and national club titles but they may be vulnerable when three players, including pitcher Thomas Cameron, are with the Black Sox for two weeks.
Meanwhile, Auckland United maintained their challenge in the series with a solid 6-0 win over Glenfi keeping one win behind Ramblers.
Eden-Roskill, under new coach Duane Jerard, now has a 4-4 win-loss record after an encouraging 5-2 win over Glenfield.
The loss of pitcher Carina Hale to a knee injury has left the Ramblers women vulnerable to challenges but they survived a 4-3 win over Howick and an 8-7 tie-breaker victory over Otahuhu, the two cellar sides.
For Metro women it was another frustrating weekend.
They went down to Marist 9-2 and then faded to a disappointing 17-0 effort against Waitakere Bears.
