KZ1 rigs up for Xmas

Auckland City Harbour News - - News - By Heather McCracken

Spray-on snow has been banished from the central city this Christmas in favour of summery, nautical decorations fit for a Pacific city.

Heart of the City is decking the streets with wreaths, baubles and banners with a Kiwi theme.

Strings of colourful balls have been rigged on yacht KZ1 at the Viaduct Harbour, creating a 50-metre Christmas tree.

“It seemed such a great idea to use a marine icon and string the Christmas baubles to make a tree,” says project manager Jane Stewart.

The tree is topped by a 2.5 metre star made from holographic vinyl that changes colour in the light.

The star’s fern and pohutukawa design also features on giant baubles and wreaths decorating the central city.

But traditional elements have not been eliminated altogether: Santa’s postbox in Queen Elizabeth II Square is accepting letters for the big man in red.

Heart of the City chief executive Alex Swney says in past years the city has been criticised for not showing enough Christmas spirit.

“This year we think Aucklanders will be really proud,” he says.
