St Patrick’s Cathedral has been announced as a finalist in the country’s most prestigious engineering awards.

The $11.6 million refurbishment of the Auckland Catholic church is a category finalist at the fourth New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards, which will be announced tonight.

The Catholic Diocese chose engineers Connell Wagner to develop the conservation and restoration of the heritage building that has served the Auckland community for more than 160 years.

Judging panel convenor David Elms says the finalists are outstanding examples of engineering innovation.

Award winners will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner at Te Papa in Wellington tonight.
