Singer Hinewehi Mohi is helping children from Newton Central School learn more about their heritage.

The Sandringham musician will be performing in a concert called Te Po tomorrow night to raise money for Te Whanau O Te Uru Karaka, the school’s Maori immersion unit.

Other performers in the concert at the Kings Arms will include Tama Waipara, Nat Rose, Betty Ann and Ruia Aperahama.

All proceeds will help send 60 children from the bilingual unit on a trip to Otaki and Porirua next year to learn about iwi there.

Mrs Mohi says the concert will be a wonderful night out.

“It has brought musicians together to do something special in support of the school,” she says.

“Aside from having a really good time people will be able to give the children the chance to experience something outside their local environment.”

Ms Mohi plans to perform several of her well-known songs on the night including Kotahitanga.

Her niece Rahia attends the bilingual unit at Newton Central and she says it has provided great learning opportunities for her.

“It’s crucial for children to get a really good handle on the language and our girl is totally bilingual now,” she says.

“The unit provides a lovely flavoursome environment for the children and gives them a firm foundation in both languages.”

Member of the organising committee Kay Ellmers says the concert is a rare occasion because it features so many prominent Maori musicians.

“They are all banding together to help our kids have a good learning experience,” she says.

“The show will have a nice, relaxed community feel and it’s a really good example of musicians coming together to support the school’s kaupapa.”

Te Po will be held at the Kings Arms from 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased for $25 in advance by emailing kay@tumanako.co.nz. Door sales are $35.
