Aotea markets to close down

Auckland City Harbour News - - News - By Jocelyn Rein

The Aotea Square markets will shut down in a fortnight, despite a petition by more than 800 people opposing the closure.

The markets, which have been running for eight years, will close on Christmas Eve to make way for the $80 million redevelopment of the square and Civic car park roof.

It is unlikely they will be allowed to return when the redevelopment work is finished.

Efforts have been made by The Edge and Auckland City Council to find a new venue.

More than 20 locations were looked at in the central city but none were suitable.

Stall-holders were optimistic in September they had found a site on Lorne St, outside the city library.

But a traffic report by Auckland City Council officers said the location was unsuitable because of traffic management issues.

People can enjoy the markets every day until December 24.
