Kids and parents both benefit from drama
Every parent’s dream of confident, enthusiastic, articulate children can be a reality. That’s the belief of Helen O’Grady.
The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy provides children, aged five to 17 with a self-development programme, designed to increase their confidence, self-esteem, communicative ability and creative talents.
The life skills learnt at Helen O’Grady’s such as eye contact, voice projection and confidence are hugely beneficial in later life in areas like job interviews, public speaking and informal speeches.
The Helen O’Grady Drama programme takes an imaginative and sensitive approach to this personal develop- ment, through a unique drama curriculum which focuses on having fun while learning skills. Children attend for one hour a week, and the programme involves no exams or competitions. Enthusiastic teachers qualified in the Helen O’Grady Drama system, combined with a friendly, fun, learning environment, motivates the children to participate willingly and achieve their best at all levels of development.
Short productions performed by each class at the end of the fourth term, give children the opportunity to put into practice the many skills they have developed through the year, and afford family and friends the chance to see their children in action.
Comments from parents afterwards, and the looks of excitement and pride on the children’s faces, are testimony to the success of the programme.
Even children who initially would have done anything rather than speak in front of an audience, or try something unknown, can be up there performing in front of several hundred people, with a huge smile on their face at the end of it.
Put simply-”Kids love drama; parents love the results.”
The academy was set up in Australia in 1979 by teacher, actress and television presenter Helen O’Grady. The success of the academy has seen it expand to franchises all over New Zealand and in 28 countries around the world.
