Mer­ry­mak­ing at mardi gras

The Pon­sonby Mardi Gras fundraiser at West­ern Park last week saw the com­mu­nity come to­gether for an evening of gourmet treats, fun per­for­mances and quirky en­ter­tain­ment.

An auc­tion of pack­ages do­nated by Pon­sonby busi­nesses and re­tail­ers raised the first funds to go to­wards the planned street car­ni­val be­ing or­gan­ised by the Pon­sonby Busi­ness As­so­ci­a­tion.

Busi­ness As­so­ci­a­tion gen­eral man­ager Justin Bade says the night was a great suc­cess and every­one had a fan­tas­tic time.

He says fi­nal fig­ures for the funds raised at the auc­tion are still be­ing tal­lied but he could con­firm a profit was made.

He says a fund­ing pool is now of­fi­cially open and ready to be added to with fur­ther events and ac­tiv­i­ties.

About 300 guests en­joyed din­ner in­side the Liv­ing Lounge tent set up for the Auck­land Fringe Fes­ti­val as they were en­ter­tained by stilt walk­ers, body painted acro­bats and drag queens.

Lo­cal co­me­dian Justine Smith MC’d on the night and high­lights were per­for­mances by Hol­lie Smith and Leza Corbin.
