Queen St to come alive
A day of free music and village markets will transform Queen St tomorrow with the New Zealand premier of Sing Sing – a celebration in dance, colour and song.
The performance is part of the Auckland Festival, which runs until March 22.
The Papua New Guinea, West Papua, Torres Strait Island, Australia and New Zealand collaboration will showcase the links between the “one saltwater people” with a mix of traditional and contemporary musical forms from Melanesia.
The region’s most signifi singers, musicians and dancers will be joined by Maori and Pacific Island artists and also accompanied by visual and sound projections.
The Market Village will offer international cuisine and local craft with music and starts at 4pm.
New Zealand collective Batucada Sound Machine and Celenod from New Caledonia will play in support of the main concert, which starts at 7.30pm.
Auckland Festival programme manager Jessica Smith urges all music-loving families to come to the biggest musical party of the event.
Queen St will be closed from 10am to 10pm for the free event.
