A second-half comeback couldn’t save Fox Memorial club league champions the Mt Albert Lions from their first defeat of the season, going down 2618 against the Papakura Sea Eagles on Saturday.

Mt Albert coach Brent Gemmell says his side came back well after being down 20-0 at the break, despite an average performance in the first half.

“We had a bit of a chat at halftime and the boys worked a little harder for each other.

“I felt we always had the opportunity to come back stronger. Twenty points proved too much in the end.”

He says there are a number of youngsters in the squad who were always going to find it challenging to go up against a team like Papakura.

“They’ve got a strong side this year, so it was always going to be a tough ask.”

And despite the defeat, Gemmell is confident his side are still on the right track.

“In all honesty the loss will probably do us more good than harm.

“It’s the reality check we need to work a little bit harder.”

Meanwhile the Marist Saints continued a good run of form, defeating the Howick Hornets 52-20.

But it wasn’t a great weekend for other local sides, with the Richmond Bulldogs going down to the Northcote Tigers 22-16, while the Mangere East Hawks thrashed the Bay Roskill Vikings 50-16.

And the East Coast Bays Barracudas took out the Ponsonby Ponies 40-8.

This Saturday Mt Albert host Richmond at Fowlds Park, Marist lock horns with Northcote at Murray Halberg Park, Bay Roskill face Howick at Blockhouse Bay and Ponsonby take on Hibiscus Coast at Cornwall Park.

Matches start at 2.30pm.
